As of 2023, there were over 62,000 private equity and venture capital-backed companies in the U.S., with the technology sector accounting for nearly half of these enterprises.
The PE EV/EBITDA multiples, which reflect the valuation of companies, peaked in 2021 at 13.8x and decreased to 12.3x by 2023, suggesting a shift in valuation standards over the period.
The U.S. private equity market is projected to grow to $460 billion in 2024, with an expected further increase to $765 billion by 2027, showcasing a strong compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11%.
In response to future uncertainties, a majority of PE firms are choosing to concentrate on existing industries and geographies instead of diversifying, with less than one-third planning to expand into new sectors or regions by 2024.
